  • About Presidents on Washington DC Infographic

This data visualization examines the shifting attitudes of Presidents to Washington DC by charting the number of times the capitol was mentioned in State of the Union addresses from 1790 to 2016 and categorizing them as either positive, neutral or negative. Over the course of the nation's history, Washington goes from being associated with a neutral grounds for diplomatic engagements with the rest of the world to a model of progressivism and a symbol of the nation to a quagmire of government inaction and partisan politics.

The data for this visualization was harvested with a tool created by SoSoLimited for a workshop at MICA in 2016.
