Borders Corporate Inspirational Video (Note: please watch this with your sound turned on.)
Typically, an item like this would have been handled by the Borders in-house video group, but they were overloaded, so the task fell to me. As a creative on the store design team I was given three days to produce a short introductory video for a company-wide presentation by the VP of Store Operations. In 2009, when this was made, Borders was struggling to find a niche in the rapidly evolving media retail landscape and was instituting radical changes in its media offerings that made some staffers uncomfortable. The message needed to be clear: change is inevitable so you might as well have some fun with it. Since Borders was moving toward a digital future, I chose to focus on a few areas of media-based technology that intersected Borders' past path and future hopes. Since I had never made a video before and was on a tight timeline I employed the tools that I had at hand: no budget, iMovie, still photos, silly music, interesting transitions and creative use of the Ken Burns effect. The result is a fun, fast-paced commentary on the nature of technological change and the near impossibility of divining the future. Music is "Breakfast Machine" By Danny Elfman.
