Throughout my tenure of managing farmers markets, not a day went by without laying eyes on 'ugly' produce. Similar to discovering images in the clouds, produce brought out great excitement whenever a duck-like pepper was found, or an eggplant with a nose. Once heirloom tomato season came around, I couldn't resist capturing the unique qualities and quirks of different varieties. By making a pattern out of the tomato portraits, it almost normalizes their attributes, something that is finally taking off in western culture with the various ugly food campaigns, while celebrating and shining a light on their uniqueness.
