I've been working with a new style of food photography than the styled, romantic, magazine photographs you may be used to. Mostly because it's forced upon me by the projects offered, but also because it flows pretty nicely with my documentary style outside of food & restaurants.
Lighting, more than anything else, is key to incredible food photography. When you don't have as much control over that as you want, it makes for a very difficult road ahead (and lots of editing, ugh). It turns out that a super simple lighting setup can work wonders: an off-camera flash and bounce card are the very basics and don't you know it... makes for a decent shot. This series (which will most likely be on-going) is meant to feature images that I really love from these somewhat off-the-cuff shoots that, for lack of a better term, require a quick and dirty approach. I also try to take the time to capture more candid images with attractive angles and the talented staff that create it, but I'm only successful every once in a while. Hopefully I'll continue to grow and learn to create better images regardless of the lighting and time limitations.
