JOSEPH MÜLLER BROCKMANN

Joseph Muller Brockmann's work played a key part in defining the international Swiss Style of graphic design and typography. His works use high contrast and clean lines as a way of communicating information easily. They are all easy to read and understand, with each design reflecting the nature of the content - for example his posters for a Beethoven concert in the Zurich Town Hall - balanced and harmonic, imitating the same elements of Beethoven's music. Perhaps the most distinct convention used by Brockmann in all of his works is the grid. Each element is carefully placed in alignment with another which allows for a perfect composition.
NEUBAU BERLIN
It is clear with Neubau Berlin's design that there is considerable influence from Brockmann. The use of clean, easy to read type and bold graphics makes again for a well balanced composition that communicates easy with the viewer. Neubau also uses pattern in a lot of works, with repeating and overlapping dots used frequently. Colour is used effectively as well, with bright colours drawing the eye around the canvas towards a particular phrase, title or graphic - for example, the bright oragnce IBSN poster. However the difference that I find with Neubau's work is the subtle use of organic textures. This is something that I'd definitely like to incorporate into my work this year.
ARTIVA DESIGN
Again there are a lot of similar deisgn conventions used by Artiva Design. Alignment of text and unified formatting of paragraphs in the 'Booooooks' poster make the imformation easy to read. Scattering of the 'o' in the same poster plays with the 'o', treating it as more of a shape than text, adding a playful element to the composition. The graphic patterns in the first two images are visually immersive and the second in particular relfects the nature of the content.
Anymade Studio’s designs are largely centred around typography. A lot of their work utilises negative space as well as text placement to draw the viewer/reader’s eye around the composition as the subject matter requires. For instance in the first image the text is arranged so that the first thing that is reads the titles of the respective designs. The focus in the 5 designs is the colour, making the viewer’s eye wander around each different design. Anymade Studio uses a lot of constructivist elements, with text clearly falling onto grids that align and interact with each other. Colour is also effectively injected into these grids (see the last yellow design). Another effective example of the use of the grids is seen in the second example, with a clear minimally structured composition.
