Village Garden - Ile-a-Vache, Haiti

Village Garden
Ile-a-Vache, Haiti
Ile-a-Vache is an island off the Southern coast of Haiti. About eight miles long and two miles wide, this island boasts some of the most beautiful views in the Caribbean. The landscape of Ile-a-Vache is markably varied. The rolling mountainous land of the West gives way to the lagoons and lowlands of the East side of the island -- where one of the the largest mangrove swamps in Haiti is located.

Jean-Patrick Lucien, a native of Ile-a-Vache, in cooperation with Earthos Institute, a non-profit organization, has been working on a number of sustainable development projects for the island. Recently, a 2.41 acre parcel of land has been purchased on Ile- a-Vache for use as a educational horticulture park featuring the bounty of tropical fruits that grow in the Caribbean. Lucien envisions this project to be a prototype for future development on the island and is hopes to include program elements such as a soccer field, play ground and changing area into the design of this “Village Garden”.
