Hubbard Street USA

I grew up on Hubbard Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah. This address was the first one I learned, and the description I've repeated most throughout my life when asked to define 'home.' It wasn't until 2017 however, when I realized my address was far from being unique. It turns out, every state in the United States except for Hawaii and Wyoming contains a street named Hubbard. While the suffix varies – Street, Lane, Avenue, Road – Hubbard is synonymous with home throughout the US.

This project takes the form of 48 postcards and a website that explore our simultaneously united and divided nation. After designing a visual language from aerial views of every Hubbard street, I created and mailed 48 postcards to a randomly selected Hubbard address in each state. Postcard recipients were directed to a website that contains diagrams of all the streets in addition to a place to submit personal stories and information. This text was then layered over respective street diagrams to form a more complete picture of Hubbard street across the nation. While the street diagrams are all remarkably similar, personal anecdotes are unique. Hubbard Street thus becomes as metaphor for shared experience and a method for illuminating connections across our deeply divided country.
