Multi-Layered Narrative

Brief

Investigate and analyse a chosen multi-layered narrative. Communicate through
the use of typography one of three possible directions/themes within the narrative
that will engage with the intended audience.

Narrative

‘The Butterfly Effect’ was the chosen narrative for this project. A psychological, science
fiction thriller about Evan Treborn, a 20 year old student who discovers that he can
travel back in time through his journals and change the traumatic events that his
memory had suppressed through blackouts as a child. Attempting to make things
better for himself and his friends he discovers that every change no matter how
small can result in large consequences.

Themes

Chaos theory—‘the butterfly effect’. It is said that the flutter of a butterfly’s wings
can ultimately cause a typhoon half way around the world. The idea that the
smallest change can end up with a dramatic result. Cause and effect.

Time travel—curiosity. The obsession and struggle of questioning “what if?”.

Hardships—the struggles they had as children and the consequences of their
actions or of those around them. Reasons for Evans blackouts and his
choice/decision to change the past.
