The Brief

Create a new-to-world, accessible, mass-market beauty brand that breaks established category codes. Your brand should be a response to some of the issues with which modern, post-demographic consumers identify with, or any other issues you feel are relevant to users of beauty products today.

The Modern Issue

Beauty products account for almost a third of all landfill space. Additionally, consumers are frustrated with inadequate packaging solutions that trap the beauty liquids/contents inside the bottles.

Solution

Aloe Africana, a sustainable natural beauty brand with Aloe Vera as its main ingredient.
How it Works:

SOLUTION 1 STRUCTURE CHANGE
Problem: Pump bottles commonly have flat bases which makes it near to impossible for the straw to absorb every last drop of the product.

Solution: Create a dip in the base of the bottle enabling the contents to fall into the dip where the straw can sit and allow the user to use all of the product.

SOLUTION 2 MEASURMENT LABEL

Problem: Consumers are binning products without realising how much of the contents are left. Additionally, some consumers are using too much of the product per application, creating unnecessary waste.

Solution: Clear strip on the label indicating how much liquid remains in the bottle. The label measurement also gives you an indication of how much of the product you should use at one time to stop people exceeding the required amount.
The Product

It’s becoming more apparent that we’re ingesting and using many more chemicals and artificial ingredients. The beauty products we’re using daily are affecting the environment.

Aloe Vera has been described as a wonder-plant. The colourless jelly-like leaf parenchyma tissue can be used in an extraordinary array of everyday beauty products such as face washes, moisturisers, shaving cream and many more.

The Design

Aloe Vera is native to arid regions of north-eastern and southern parts of African and Madagascar. I have visually represented this through tribal print patterns. I took inspiration for the patterns/shapes from the Aloe Vera plant, looking at its geometry and features. I drew the patterns free hand as I wanted to give an unpolished, earthy, natural look which gives a more friendly feel/approach.

The name of my brand comes from the plant ‘Aloe Africana’ which is a species of aloe plant and is labelled as one of the most desirable amongst the Aloe plant family. I wanted a logo that was simple but still touched on a triangular geometry, relating to the Aloe leaf shape.

Additionally, I designed the bottle shape inspired by the shape of an Aloe leaf.
