Week 4- Printmaking Image Transfer

REFLECTION

I wish I have learnt all these methods before hand. The method of transferring images onto different platforms such as cloths, wood, paper, acrylic, and so on. However, I am glad to be able to learn so many techniques as sometimes different techniques will determine different transfer results, different amount of time needed to produce, and also depending on the mediums you have on hand. Patience is key. I noticed that some transferring method willl need more time and effort than another. For example, the method of using an iron needs multiple time of going back and forth with the iron before getting the best result of transfer. Often, the transferred results will be around 50%-70% similar to the original image. The colour will be slightly off, becoming lighter that the original image, and there will be slightly small patches of colours that could not be transfer onto the image, giving it a very vintage look and feel. Especially on wood. Therefore lots of try-and-error is needed to know which kind of transferring method suits best. One of my biggest take away from learning all these transferring method is that I am able to transfer logo, text fonts, images onto mock-up publications of any medium without the need of going to a printing shop to produce the exact same work. Which is more convient and help me to save tons of money.
Soluble transfer method 1

Transfer marker
This method is convenient and does not get your hands dirty. All you need is this special marker. However I felt that you will need to go over afew layers of the marker for the print to be transfer, and the print that is transferred tends to be a little smudgy.
Soluble transfer method 2

Using Tinner

I felt that this method is one of the best transferring method as it requires less time and the amount of ink transferred can be seen quite clearly when compared to the other methods. Just note that tinner is really toxic and smelly, so its best to do it in an opened area.
Using Mod podge glue

This method uses the most time to get it transferred. The key here is to cover a thick layer of Mod Podge glue over the print, and when placed against your desired medium, let it dry fully. I would suggest at least a full day. The result of transfer is good, however I am not a fan of it as it is time consuming.
Using water onto tape

I love this method, its like making a sticker with simply using water and tape. After placing a tape neatly onto your image, wet the image with water and start rubbing off the water surface. Note that you should not rub it too hard, just a right amount of pressure to remove the paper. One thing that i dislike about this method is that sometimes the image might be quite huge and you might need to use several tapes to filled up the image. As a result, there might be lines joining two tapes together which I find it to be quite ugly.
Using iron

Although all you need is an iron, I find that it takes quite alot of time to get it transfer onto the medium. In this case, I tried transferring it onto wood, it works but you will need to iron it many times. However when I tried to iron the image onto cloth using the same amoung of time, not much of the image was transferred. Its as close as nothing. So I felt that this transferring method works only on certain mediums.
BRIEF

Design a wooden signage using image transfer method. Select one of the businesses below and do a small scale mockup with wood. You can either use an existing brand name or come up with one yourself. You are free to propose any style or art direction for the design. The client is also open to an illustrative signage.
FINAL

Process: I selected the brand: Austin & Austin; a cafe and lounge bar. Since the logo is black and white in color, I took a picture of me and my friends in a lounge bar, and in corporate the logo with the picture. The colors uses in the graphic are black and white, to give off a minimalistic and vintage feel to the store. The method of transfer that I will be using will be the use of Mod podge, as I felt that the image transfer will be the clearest. The down side will be that it will take up to a day for it to dry up.
The first step is to apply mod podge on to the image.
Next is to filp the image over and stick it onto the wooden board. Wait for the glue to dry.
When its dry, use a damp cloth to wet the surface of the paper, then start to rub the paper off. Try not to add too much force to it.
