Turtles in the Sky

C O N C E P T
“Turtles in the Sky” is a personal project. I was reading an interesting book on women who changed our history and I came across Amelia Earhart and Amy John-son. These two beautiful and brave women inspired me to transform masculine silhouettes into women’s wear. Amelia Earhart was the first female American aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone. One of her famous quotes is “My ambition is to have this wonderful gift pro-duce practical results for the future of commercial flying and for the women who may want to fly tomorrow’s planes.” Amy Johnson was a British aviator. She was first recognized as a hero after she flew alone to Australia with her plane called “Jason”. After that, she broke several time and distance re-cords to different countries.

Different from most of my projects which are hand drawn, I challenged myself into practicing new forms of media. I hand sketched the croquis and scanned them in. Once I had the bodies in, I initially worked with Adobe Illustrator to create the shapes I needed. Examples of the process is shown on the images below. As soon as this step was done, I took my project into Adobe Photoshop and gave the garments texture and shading as well as faces and hair to my figures.

Since these two ladies were up in the sky, for my color inspiration I decided to look back down to the Ocean. Sea turtles may be slow on land but they can glide through water. Like finger prints, a turtle shell is unique to each and everyone of them. They tend to be different tints and shades of green with a mixture of a bright color, which in this case is tomato red.
