Chartres Artist Book

This was a response to the Chartres Cathedral, which I visited in 2014. In an architecture assignment, my classmates and I were asked to design an architectural form based on an existing building. I chose the form of a book, to represent the intimacy of being in a house of prayer. This is meant to be an object one could possibly have in their house, and call their own.

The patterns are taken from actual stained glass windows in Chartres. I was intrigued by the fact that the windows were so densely glazed, that the interior was quite dark. There were so many windows, one would think the inside of the cathedral would be brimming with colorful light!
Watch the video at the bottom for a short deomstration of the accordion-style book. It is about 9" high, made from bristol and cut by hand.
