The Guildry Incorporation of Dundee: Heraldic Design

The Guildry Incorporation of Dundee
Heraldic Design

Background:
Ever since The Guildry was founded in 1199, they have been represented by the ‘4XX’, within a shield, this is known as the merchants mark. The mark was used as a symbol of quality, stamped on traded ‘goods’ that were to be exported out of Dundee.

The Brief:
Over 800 years on members of The Guildry have decided it’s time for a new identity. The Guildry requires a brand new heraldic device (coat of arms). The coat of arms must follow strict and precise heraldic guidelines. It can include as many elements as you see necessary. The shields shape and divisions are up to you. Before starting the design process, extensive research must be done on the history of Dundee and The Guildry’s relationship with the city.

Outcome:
In the coat of arms, I wanted to pay homage to various trades, and their importance in developing the community and a living for the people of Dundee. Prosperity in the community is something that the Guildry work to preserve to this day. I have also paid homage to the current City of Dundee coat of arms by using a more modern fleur-de-lis icon. The motto ‘in multitudine virtutis’, translates to ‘strength in community’.
