Custom Collaborative Furniture

After bread design moved to a new office space, I repurposed spare acrylic blocks from a recent job to create our new reception area furniture. Our Creative Director’s only two specifications were that I create a bookshelf that could double as a collaborative standing working space, and a reception desk that could be versatile enough to accommodate two receptionists. I designed, built and detailed both pieces in just three weeks.
Notable design aspects include: gloss finish to accommodate whiteboard markers on the surface, adjustable shelving heights, removable side barrier to provide extra privacy between the reception desk and seating area, and an ample amount of both sitting and standing collaborative work space. It was a great moment to see the books finally fill the shelves and to be able to use the desk upon completion!
I began by using each of the 1’ x 3’ pre-cut pieces as a standard building blocks to minimize cutting. After several days filled with circular saws, rulers, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, I    assembled piece by piece with silicone caulk to allow the slabs to be repurposed again if needed.
