ABOUT THE PROJECT
A self-initiated exploration into a different illustration style I personally never attempted before. Discovering new appreciation for the intricate detailing of elements often overlooked, such as hairs, tattoos, fingers, cloths, etc.

This series ventures into pop culture trends and portrayal of female youths — black hair, big round plugs and nose rings are all defining features of the modern-day youth scene.
The following illustrations take on the irony, truths and sarcasm of the constant pursuit of trends and jumping on the bandwagon for the oxymoronic validated rebellion.
#1
Black hair, fancy nose rings and black ear plugs are the characteristics and must-have statement pieces of the modern-day female youth who want to stand out from the basic crowd.

But the problem is, everyone is striving for the same look so much so that conforming to non-conformity is becoming a sarcastic narration of today's society's pursuit for validation and rebellion. Instead of standing out and striving to be different, a new category of personality has emerged, and the very same look that these youths use to set them apart has now branded them together.
#2
A close-to-life interpretation of what makes a 'cool kid' today — black clothes, tattooed body parts and quirky hairstyles to make a statement of your "one-of-a-kind unique disposition" - in which everyone else is doing too.

However, whilst portraying the ideal embodiment of a generation, strategically placed reminder of "work hard" (translated from Mandarin) shows how youths of today not only want to look good but are also striving to be the best versions of themselves and maximise their potential and talents.
#3
A visual representation of modern day's insatiable pursuit of materialistic and superficial things. It turns a luxury and trends into a religion, where people aim and strive and sometimes even betray their own moral codes to achieve temporary gains. People make rash decisions, getting tattoos because its the top trending search on Tumblr, irreversibly expanding ear holes and getting noses pierced and decorated with ornaments fit for Spanish bulls because Instagram seems to love such pictures, etc.

While aiming to resemble that of Mother Mary, this illustration does not bear religious references (cross, talismans, etc).
