Darwin & Genesis
ISTD competition entry 2012
In response to the ISTD competition brief entitled ‘It happened on this day’, I decided to look at the impact of Charles Darwin’s publication ‘On the Origin of Species’. The piece focuses on the implications of Darwin’s ideas in ‘rewriting’ creationist theory. In order to do so, an illuminated character was made by creating ornate patterns from letterforms, accompanied by supporting copy from Darwin’s book. It reflects the reverent attention to detail in religious manuscripts, including the ‘Lindesfarn Gospels’ while imposing Darwin’s scientific findings upon it; evolutionary theory as a challenge to accepted religious concepts.
