Mid-Autumn Festival is a Chinese tradition, a celebration of the moon at its fullest. According to Chinese legends, a rabbit lives on the moon. This kind of imagery is common leading up to the festival. In this project, I had to handle both English and Chinese text.
The illustration was drawn while taking inspiration from classically Chinese drawings and brush strokes; careful, considered, and ultimately subtle. The rabbit was chosen to represent the impending arrival of the Mid-Autumn Festival. A traditional Chinese pattern adds imagery of traditional moon cakes, which is eaten on the day.
This alternative version uses a muted rose red which is a colour that both symbolises national pride and draws attention to the moon and rising composition. This version also has darker edges and the patterns around those edges, which imitates a gold-like shine.
