Trail Mix Packaging Redesign

Kar's Nuts is a brand that is recognized for a few products, but mostly for their Sweet N' Salty Mix. Kar's products are usually seen in vending machines as a healthy alternative for potato chips, cookies, etc. However, the package that I've chosen to redesign was intended for store shelves. As you will see below, the original package that Kar's had been using for their Sweet N' Salty Mix is not awful, but I believe it falls on the boring side. An average design combined with a typically boring product (trail mix), might lose the interest of potential buyers.

1930s travel posters that I referenced to create the package redesign. I felt that these achieved the classic/original feel and adventure imagery that I was going for. The consumers that Kar's needs to reach must be caught off guard by a not-your-typical-can-of-nuts design. Also, the target audience needs to be convinced that Kar's Sweet N' Salty Mix is both more tasty and more healthy than the big name competitors—something that I could stress using the color schemes and purity of the 1930s posters.
A quick snapshot of the nut section of my local grocery store. I decided to stay away from reds and blues judging by what I was seeing on the shelves.
Rough draft #1. Note the color experiment mistake...
Rough draft #2. Color still is not right with me. However, the layout was starting to agree with me.
