All the fun you can imagine... and more! Here's 100% handmade ruling pen from an extremely talented craftsman - Maciek from Przy Ogniu

I decided to go with this quite unusual shape of the nib, as it seemed to be particularly versatile to me. Although I think I was right, mastering this thing will require more practice than what I initially imagined... The nib is ca. 19mm wide, and due to its shape, it can be used for creating both regular lettering works and large scale letters.

Although in the beginning I struggled to get two decent lines out of this beast, I instantly fell in love with this wonderful pen! And the effects and the variety of different line widths and shapes it allows me to get just never stop astonishing me... This is my first tool of this kind and I have never used a nib of similar shape before (which is not easy).

But the practice itself is loads of fun!!

Because Maciek does his magic at home (unfortunately, he struggles to find himself a spot for a workshop), there were some limitations. The material of the nib is brass (instead of stainless steel), which has proven to be the ideal choice. It's not too flexible nor stiff, and it works just perfect.

Also, the screw is not what one is used to seeing in various ruling pens... And I'm very happy with that. It's way more comfortable in use comparing to the other types used in nibs. And it works just as well.

Thanks to the screw, I can modify the gap in the nib, which is very handy when working with different mediums.

The lines are everything you can imagine - from bold, fat, irregular strokes to thin lines. But it's still a ruling pen, so it can (and will) surprise you. What I love the most it the dynamics of the lines. It's almost like they were living their own life. Of course, when you put extra effort to it, you can keep them under control (more or less), but that's not really the point of using a ruling pen for me :)

And the shading when used with watercolour... 

We're already working on a new tool :) Ruling pens are super fun, and for letterists who enjoy expressive lettering along with traditional calligraphy, it's a must-have.
