Pause Pod + Sensory Map
This project was in collaboration with the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. The objective was to design a 'tool' to help the those on the Autism spectrum better experience one of their premier exhibits, The Acrocanthosaurus. Sensory Zones is a series of touch-points that help museum-goers navigate the exciting, and often overwhelming, experience of going through a museum. The first touch-point is called a “Pause Pod,” it allows a sensory isolation escape in the midst of high auditory/high visual exhibits. The second touch-point is a Sensory Map that can be viewed online and downloaded at home, or picked up (for free) at the front desk. This categorizes regions of the museum into high and low sensory zones, accounting for lights, noises, movement, and seating.
Michael faced 3 main challenges that we wanted to design for

+ General Anxiety
+ Pervasive Developmental Disorder
+ Hypersensitive to touch and sound
The Pause Pod provides a reflective space in a learning environment. It aims to raise awareness and encourage the
daily Pause.

The Sensory map creates zones within the museum to help users map out routes that are compatible with their unique sensory issues. It points out opportunities for touch and motion, high and lights and sounds, along with seating options. The Pause Pod is also highlighted throughout the museum to help those through high sensory areas.
