Art 130: Shakespeare Posters
For this project, we were assigned to create three different posters for a specific Shakespeare play. The play that my group chose was “Twelfth Night.” We were to design a typography poster, an icon poster, and an artist poster.
For our typography poster, we could not use anything but type. This was definitely a challenge but I really like the result of my poster. The most difficult part of this poster was representing the play accurately through only type. I went through many different ideas and posters until I came up with this one. The black type is peeling back to expose the pink type underneath. Just like how in the play, Viola is exposed to be a woman although she was pretending to be a man throughout the story.
We were each assigned an artist to copy the style of for our artist posters. I was assigned Bradbury Thompson. Bradbury’s and my style are very different from each other so this presented another challenge. I ended up going for a CMYK color scheme like Bradbury often did. I think that my final poster ended up looking professional and like it could be used for a real play. I also think that it represents Bradbury’s style really well.
This last poster is an icon poster and was the most hands-on. We were to create some sort of tangible image to use on our poster. We could create a painting, a drawing, take a photograph, etc. I did a print using Styrofoam plates and ink. I cut out different objects that represented the play well and inked them onto paper. I then scanned these and edited them in Photoshop. I really like the personal element that this added to my final poster.
