I was commissioned to make this project for my cousin's graduation present. My cousin, who was graduating with a pre-med degree, loves bacteriology especially. As I thought about how to depict bacteria, I remembered that most bacteria are pretty transparent, and we stain them with bright chemicals to be able to see them. I decided to jump off that idea—applying stain to the bacteria allows us to see them—and use it as a metaphor for science as a whole. The natural world—which, I believe, is the work of God—is so wonderful, and the more we study and pay attention, the more amazing things we can see.
