Michela Formento's profile

Magazine : SubUrban

Objective: To provide a platform that presents lifestyle, living and visual commentary on what is happening at the urban ‘edge’ of Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay.

Product: SubUrban is a publication based in Nelson Mandela Bay, pegged at the new sub-culture of design aware/eco-conscious consumers. Its intent is to build on the urban:suburban tension, expressed previously, through the inclusion of provocative and engaging articles on this interface, this crossover space, these interstices. Think uncompromising, exposing narratives and tough perspectives. The “warts and all” approach is what is set to position SubUrban in the role of ‘public voice’. Much like Life magazine did in the sixties, SubUrban is not afraid to show it like it is, nor to put an interpretative slant on getting a message across with hard-hitting documentaries and revealing exposés. The magazine hopes to convey a non-commercial identity even while it obviously needs to operate in a traditional commercial environment. The inclusion of feature articles will be free form expressiveness, which will allow photographers and designers more freedom to explore creative solutions in order to get the intended message across to the reader.

Concept: My concept focuses on humanity and showcases the harsh realities behind city living and the negative characteristics that become part of people's thoughts and lifestyles within urban environments. The magazine begins on a shocking note, with a stark article on 'urban junkies' suggesting atrocious and ignorant human behaviour  by these selfish, careless and heartless humans within cosmopolitan city living. As the magazine progresses, more positive outlets and humanistic qualities begin to unfold, with 'Humans of the Metro' centralizing on real-life stories from normal human beings. Other areas and topics are discussed and showcased within this magazine issue, such as Italian food culture within South Africa. A conscious thought-provoking statement at the end of the magazine subtly reminds the viewer of the real-life on-going issue of humanity and human qualities.
