PROGRESS is a line of designer athletic wear inspired by art history movements. Using laser cutting for the packaging itself, I created three triangular boxes to fit each garment. Combining my love for graphic design, fitness, and art history, PROGRESS came to life through patterning, laser cutting, and sewing. Each pattern is hand drawn and tiled to create a seamless, half-drop pattern. Each one of the garments has it's own art movement as inspiration, which is labeled inside of each respective box.

The Ab-Ex Legging is inspired by Abstract Expressionism. Developed in New York in the 1940s, AbEx is a post-war American painting movement. Artists created their “signature” mark on a canvas, further emphasizing abstraction. They disregarded previous notions of abstraction, such as cubism, and used their own feelings and ideas to paint. The autographical mark became world renowned in artists like Jackson Pollock and Barnet Newman. This legging was a derivative of Franz Kline’s Painting Number 2 (1954, Museum of Modern Art.)

The Pop Tank is inspired by Pop Art. The International Pop movement emerged in the 1950s in Britain. Pop Art focuses on mass culture, advertising, and found objects. The origins of pop are in the post-war period, focusing on irony and humor to convey anti-consumerism messages. Artists like Andy Warhol and Eduardo Paolozzi are best known for their dramatic pieces. This tank top was inspired by the colors frequently seen in North America’s Pop movement.

The Bauhaus Bra is inspired by the Bauhaus art school in Germany. Bauhaus opened in 1919 and closed in 1933. Bauhaus, meaning School of Building, combined craft and fine arts and is most well known for it’s approach to design. Triangles, circles, and squares are prevalent in Bauhaus design. Primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) are also a focus of Bauhaus design.
This sports bra was inspired by the Bauhaus’ influence on modern architecture and the lines of the school itself.
