SHRINES OF CITIZENSHIP

Shrines of Citizenship
Over the last fifteen years we witnessed the strengthening of European external borders and the tightening of security measures of the European Union and with it the violence of the administrative apparatuses that are created by the existence of borders: treaties, directives, agreements, regulations, programmes, patrols, quarantine, wire fences, walls, detention camps and vigilance. Facing the inaccessibility of a Fortress Europe, which selects, prohibits, and coerces immigrants with the institutional weight of its borders, the migration is an otherworld journey, the passport is a mirage, and citizenship is a miracle.
The video, part of EBANOCollective’s exhibition at Ethnographic Terminalia 2013, alludes to the complexity of mobility and citizenship along all national borders specifically evoking, through an installation of devotional wax heads, the memory of the thousands of people that in the last decades disappeared in the Mediterranean sea attempting to reach the European southern border.
