Lindsey Mack - Competitive Scholarships 2012-2013

The following five images are selections from the body of work produced while studying abroad in Florence in fall 2012. They are explorations of observed color and texture that laid on the facades of buildings in the city. The inspiration for the work is derived from a fascination of the historical record that these building surfaces contained; architecture remaining from as far as the 15th century that has undergone the dual processes of accumulation and deterioration. Contemporary materials such as paint, plaster, debris, posters and graffiti coexisting on the same surface as materials from centuries prior. These paintings are depictions of found compositions and combine vivid color, texture and layering.

The next three images are paintings rendered in a similar painterly, abstract fashion, but begin to question the singularity vs. duality of a moment or a person. They provoke the idea of multiple realities and identities of what is commonly thought of as singular.
