About Growing Girls
The Growing Girls Project utilizes an empowering approach to puberty education through a cognitively appropriate mixed-media package of tools designed for young girls ages 8-10 in Baltimore. Informed by research done by Anne Herbert for her Johns Hopkins PhD dissertation, these materials address the underuse and ineffectiveness of currently available puberty education material. The three products that make up the project—a mirror, activity book, and website—offer different modes of engagement and can be used by girls in private or together with caregivers, parents, or teachers.
The Growing Girls Project has been awarded a Sappi Ideas that Matter Grant and will begin testing in select Baltimore schools.
Mirror and Guide
In addition to a simple white mirror, a circular pamphlet acts as a road map that encourages exploration
The activity book is designed to be explored by the girls with their caregivers or teachers to facilitate an open dialogue about puberty and growing up.
The project's mobile optimized website is designed to give girls access to hundreds of prerecorded, archived conversations between several adolescent characters about puberty, sexuality, and growing up.
