FabLab Electric Guitar
During my time in a FabLab for a work placement I decided to undertake a project using the equipment available to me to become familiar with what I had access to, because of the close ties to music with the NerveCentre I decided to create an electric guitar based on a Telecaster. I used plywood as it would look great with the layered look on the edges of the guitar and it was made up of 1x 18mm Section and 2x 12mm.
I used Fusion 360 to create the outline of the guitar by tracing over an existing image to get the correct shape and dimensions. This was then taken into Illustrator to get a clean vector line which could be taken to the ShopBot CNC.
The drawing changed quite a few times due to trial and error until and taking into account details I had missed or had not considered I finally got the drawing exactly right.
ShopBot CNC cutting out early version of the guitar a problem with the drawing caused it to cut a lot slower than usual. .
I glued the 3 sections together and clamped them to give a firm join. Once dry I used a hand held router to round down the edges at at depth of 12mm. I then spent many hours sanding at the edges to make it as smooth and seamless as possible.
Vinyl stickers where also cut out which I would apply to the guitar which were FabLab themed. I also laser cut out some guitar picks on a laser cutter with the logo etched onto the front of them.
Due to problems which the drawing which caused the CNC to cut out on the line making the entire guitar too small, I recreated a second version which was much more accurate and would fit well.
At this point I focused on the final sanding sanding before spray varnishing the body. It got 4 coats to make it look as smooth as possible. I fitted all the parts which I had fitted before this point to allow me to easily assemble it afterwards. I then soldiered the wires together.
