Gift Booklet
This project was to design a print ready multi-page booklet, using a recent General Conference address as the content. The booklet was to be 7 x 10 inches tall with 6 spreads (12 pages), saddle stitched. Only one image was allowed, of the speaker, with the rest of the booklet a typographic solution using an underlying grid structure.
Back (left) and Front (right) covers for the booklet.
The cover for the booklet turned out very well, complementing the subject of the talk. The bright yellow of the large 'Joy' in the title is eye-catching and evokes the emotion of joy, lightness, well-being. The dark purple background stabilizes and grounds it, while evoking peace and royalty, symbolic of Jesus Christ who is the source of our joy. The front and back covers have a consistent look while still carrying separate information. Both covers are inviting, leading the reader into the booklet.
An inside spread of the booklet, pages 4 and 5.
Two typefaces were used in the booklet; Avenir Next LT Pro for the body copy and Egyptian Slate Std for the headings, block quotes, and drop capitals. Various sizes and weights were used to add interest and appropriate emphasis, to make the content more readable, and the message easier to understand.
Another inside spread of the booklet, pages 6 and 7.
The booklet was designed on a four column grid, with the body copy occupying the center two columns of each page. Footnotes were placed in the outer column, and block quotes broke the grid to spread across the page. Large words in light yellow (focus and joy) also broke the grid, not only crossing the grid columns but  at times also straddling the pages or exiting the bottom of the page.
