Bookbinding - The culture issue
Brief:
Construct a Bookwork that researches and explores in a lateral manner a cultural issue that is topical or historical. This workbook must be designed to fit into a NZ Post A4 WTG Flat Box (outside dimensions 320x215x40mm) and be able to be mailed to Bookwork exhibitions
Rationale
There are nearly 100 countries chosen the national flower to represent their area. However, China is the only country which still has an argument about it. Accordingly, the culture issue of my book is to find out what kind of flower should be an emblem in China.
China finds that it is difficult to choose a single representative from many different genres of flowers. The Peony and Plum Blossom are the most poplar flowers. Some specialists plan to name both flowers to position which means ?two flowers, one country?. However, Chinese government disagrees with that because it is not necessary and they think that symbol should be only one cannot be two.
In China, there are five conditions for choosing floral emblem. Firstly, the flower should be distributed widely. Secondly, the meaning of the flower should always be positive. Thirdly, the appearance of the flower should be beautiful. Fourthly, the flower should relate to the history and the culture of China. At last but not least, the flower should be valuable. My book will focus on these two flowers and compare with those five conditions.
I separate two books for this topic, one is about Peony and the other is about Plum Blossom. The reason for this is that, it is the way to compare those flowers easily. Moreover, I make all the flowers with soft clay in the NZ Post A4 Box which is not too heavy. Beside, the flowers in the box are the emblem in other countries. Therefore, there is a strong contrast with the white cover of my book and set in front of the box that make the book more outstanding.
