Survivor. Platformer/puzzler. Game Final

Survivor is a platformer/puzzler game for my game methodology final. Its a game I enjoyed making for the story aspect and in general.

For the story of this game, I wanted to make it set in the future, giving an uncertain, yet possible, future for America. I based the game's story off three things. 1. The protests/riots/marches against President Trump. 2. The Hunger Games. "The Reaping" in the story is "The Reckoning" here. The difference between the two is the name, and "The Reckoning"  which happens weekly and only includes five people in a depressing, dull arena and affects people of any age, while "The Reaping" happens yearly, has 24 people between the ages of 12-18 pitted against each other in usually a nice, well constructed arena. And Lastly, The Purge. I really liked the idea of an America in which there was a 12 hour period where crime was totally legal (I, of course, prefer this being fake). So I used the mindset of the people committing the crimes in The Purge and put them into the Anarchists in this story.
One important part of the story is the fact that we let the destruction of America and our values happen. This is where the riots/protests/marches against President Trump and the uncertain future of America come into play. We cannot seem to stop anything that's going on in America right now and it will only get worse. We cannot change the President of the United States, and no one can accept that. If this keeps going the way it is, while being a very big stretch, this could very well happen.

My favorite aspect of this game is the rotating platforms. It adds a nice challenge and skill mechanic that you have to incorporate when you play the game. I also had a lot of fun programming them, Like level 3 for example:

The game had a lot of changes to it. The title was originally working title during the prototype phase, then changed to Savior. I went with savior for awhile because originally your character would restore America, or at least try to, to its normal state. But since I didn't like that as time went on, and the fact that it seems really unrealistic, i scrapped it and went with Survivor, hinting at the fact that you are meant to survive and escape the hellhole.

During the design process, I added more levels, more challenge, Made Level 3 the level it is (It was originally Level 4), double jump for Level 3 so it was beatable, changed some blocks that caused the level to be impassable, and the background and art also changed during development. Originally, I wanted the number on the wall in the background to increment by one each level, but I quickly grew to dislike that idea. I figured the anarchists would want to instill as little hope into the "player" as possible, so in most levels, the background says "Floor 1"
The last few levels say "Doom" meaning they're the hardest.
Another thing I wanted to include was the illusion that "Floor 1" and "Doom" were dripping, and what would they be dripping with? Blood. Which is why it's red. When I was putting that illusion in, I quickly grew to dislike it because i felt like it became hard to read and it seemed too unrealistic. I left the text red to show the true insanity of the Anarchists. They would write in someone else's blood.

This, in a nutshell, was my final. I hope everyone enjoyed it including the professor. The class was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. Thank you for the opportunity.
