Grunge To Kill A Mockingbird

Description: The purpose of this project was to become familiar with the grunge style and to communicate a message through design.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, etc.): To complete this project, I used Adobe Illustrator. I used the text tool with transformations to create slanted text. I used the "Open Your Eyes" font and Helvetica for the text. I divided the image of the bird into fewer colors using image trace.

E&P: I did my best to accurately use the grunge style by making text overlap and tilt. I used text as a grunge texture on the front cover. I found a messy font to use as my grunge text. I used font type, size, and color to create contrast and draw attention to certain areas of the design.

Reflection: The most important things I learned from this project were how to be more free with my designs and how to use the grunge style. I think that my design is visually appealing, but I wish that I could have found more ways to use typography to communicate a message about what the book is about.

Color Theory:
I used colors in this design to try to attract attention to certain words in text and to communicate a message. Since the University of Alabama's main school color is red, I made the "University of Alabama" text red. I did the same with the "Oxford University" text.   I also used a darker gray on the text "black" and a lighter gray for the text "white" on the front flap. I also used color in the critic reviews to attract attention to key words such as "freshness".
