Dowry is the story of traditional Chinese value of family, child, and mirage. A tremendous dowry could bring her family face and glory and also her status when she got married. Here the dowry box is filled with black balloons with a shape of mother’s breast. The color of black indicates death and unfortunate in Chinese culture, in the contrast to the red color of the “red pocket” and paper cut of “喜”(in Chinese, this character means lucky and happiness). A huge irony is thus settled. Those Clear pipes are transferring breast milk to a little boy born in a red pocket placed in the center of the dowry. In the cap, the girl was entangled and suffocated by the red net with a marriage countdown machine. This dowry is an abbreviation of the stereotype that males have a priority above all females in Chinese society.
