Chairs
Portraits from the Home
In chairs, I see people. Isee demeanor and attitude, experience and feeling. I see myself and I seeothers. I see parts named after our own, and shapes parallel to our bodies. Inmy work, I use the chairs I’ve lived around my entire life as subjects torelate to, and in turn, emote through. I focus on and support the chair’s personality by enhancing it with thebackground, color, and application of paint. An old chair that’s falling aparthints at an eventful past, with a brocade pattern carved through the gritty, muted paint. Conversely, an ornate Victorian chair has a higher, glamorous presencein color and form, mimicking the attitude of the people who first used them. The unique traits of each chair lend itself to a different painting, providinga variety of color palettes and applications to accomplish their individuality. These empathetic portraits draw an understanding from the viewer, whether it isas a person or as an interactive object.
