Putnam Triangle
The following project was developed as part of the foundational Studio for Public Spaces in Pratt Institute.
Putnam Plaza, also know as Putnam Triangle, is the resulting space between intersecting Fulton and Grand Streets, in Brooklyn. The neighborhood it is located in, Clinton Hill, has experienced great change in the previous 5 years, as evidenced in both GIS data, on-site surveys and behavioral analysis.
The results of our research lead us to believe that aspects beyond the spatial resolution of the plaza might have been overlooked, such as underlying concerns about displacement and the resulting friction amongst long-time residents and newcomers that manifested in the ways the plaza was used. For this, we proposed a Day of Play Toolkit, aimed to start a conversation about displacement through group activities.
Nonetheless, a spatial proposal was required, to which the response was a re-envisioning of FAB's and the NYC Department of Transportation's redevelopment proposal for the plaza.
Client: Fulton Area Business (FAB) Alliance.
Instructors: David Burney, Meg Walker.
Team: Andrea Barley, Maria G. Gonzalez, Rachael Gutierrez, Emily Ahn Levy, Karissa Lidstrand, Chris Riley.
