Crop Magazine Issue 01: Typography

For the weird. For the wacky. For the different. For the experimenters. For the ambitious.
For the daring. For the savvy. For the design nerd. For the curious.

For you. Crop Magazine.

A magazine that celebrates the beauty of typography in many forms. Where grunge takes a bath, its style boasts a sophisticated, refined grunge that entices lovers of type, both clean, simple and sophisticated, and weird, wacky and experimental.

Each issue tackles a different theme in two different colours, allowing both the content, and the type to shine. This issue celebrates the science behind Typography, and the playful boundary between pragmatism and artistry, in cyan and magenta. It features articles by the likes of Ellen Lupton and Kenya Hara.

Ellen Lupton's White Space, explores the ever changing debate over the notion and importance of White Space in the ever changing digital world. With the use of transparent paper, what seems like an overwhelming mass of text, suddenly becomes a refreshing, easy to read, and visually interesting composition. The spread highlights both the negative effects of neglecting white space, and the relief and necessity of its presence.

Kenya Hara's Typeface & Typography details the evolution of Typography, from a means of merely expressing information to a thing of beauty, an art form. Experimenting with questionable legibility and readability, the spreads depict a play between pragmatism and artistry as the type shifts between communicating information, and demanding appreciation of form.
