Akzidenz Modern
Type design, 2015

Akzidenz Modern is a modulated sans serif created during my year of research at the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique. this typeface is a meeting between the German character Akzidenz Grotesk (Hermann Berthold, 1898) and the modern French character, Didot (Firmin Didot, XVII century). Akzidenz Grotesk was not chosen by chance. Conceived for a "German typeface" by respondents during my research (see project "Le même air"), it is a sans serif designed by a German typedesigner and distributed by a German foundry. Apparently the first drawings of this font are based on forms of modern characters popular at this time: the Walbaum, itself based on Didot. Moreover, Walbaum and Didot characters were also cited in my questionnaire as, respectively, a German typeface and a French typeface. Akzidenz Grotesk and Akzidenz Modern are both used for composing text and titles in the book Le même air. The use of Akzidenz Grotesk, systematic in the first part of the edition, is becoming increasingly rare and Akzidenz Modern is used more and more until the third part where it is mainly used.
