Brief:
to create a design concept for a brochure for the Berlioz Season, for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The design is based around one of Berlioz’s best known works - Symphonie Fantastique. Based on Berlioz’s own unrequited love for the Irish actress, Harriet Smithson, this five-movement work depicts the different stages from when he first sets eyes on his beloved, outlined in the ‘idee fixe’ in the ‘Reveries’ 1st movement, to the elegant Ball of the 2nd. During the 3rd movement the artist becomes increasingly aware of his desperate loneliness and the on-coming thunder. Driven mad by his beloved’s total disdain, the artist falls into a crazed frenzy of opium-enhanced madness in the 4th and 5th movements, with marches to the scaffold, heads being lopped off, and witches and dances.

This brief was a bit tricky, mainly because of the lack of picture which usually enrich SCO’s brochures. This time, we only had a pencil portrait of the artist available as well as a painting by Julio de Diego inspired by the Symphony.
The creatured from the painting have been used throughout the brochure to symbolise the disturbing character of the music piece.
