Hidden Treasures : The 5th Scream Contest

Munch Contest Entry

This is my entry piece for Adobe's Hidden Treasures: The 5th Scream Contest. 'The Scream' shows a visualization and expression of Munch's anxiety and despair. So I thought, what would these feelings look like if I were to do another version of the Scream?

In this painting, I interpreted Edvard Munch's "The Scream" painting with a touch of realism. I decided to recreate the subject in Munch's painting in a more realistic way while retaining the colors used in the original painting. As stated in one of Munch's poem :

"I was walking along the road with two friendsThe Sun was setting – the Sky turned blood-red.And I felt a wave of Sadness – I pausedtired to Death – Above the blue-blackFjord and City Blood and Flaming tongues hovered."

At this moment, the skies seem to be alive. Explaining the fiery colors seemingly to engulf the man in the painting.
I also added a hint of symbolism by representing the waves of the color in the sky with a subtle imagery of birds. For me, they represent 'life' and their voices can echo through skies. This suits to visualize the figurative language that Munch used which is when he 'heard' the 'scream of nature'.
The Process
Here as some key frames of the process of my digital painting. I used four of Edvard Munch's digitized brushes created by Kyle T. Webster particularly: Filbert, Medium Flat, Short, Flat Sparse. Filbert became my favorite in an instant as I was able to create a realistic texture on painting the subject.
All in all, I've really enjoyed making this and I'll definitely used the brushes in the future. This contest also encouraged more to learn and read about Edvard Munch's biography which truly inspired me as an artist. I've decided to put more emphasis with the use of color and recreating the main subject, making it more vibrant and close to realism. Hopefully, conveying pure emotions and provoking the mind, just like Munch did.
