Percentage of Mexican Americans

  • I was inspired by my research on the Mexican American Civil Rights movement and how that shaped identity looking specifically how people identified at the beginning versus how people identify today.  I created 8 white fabric bodies and 12 tan fabric bodies representing the statistics from the 2010 census. In the census 43% of Mexican Americans identified as white while 57% identified as other in the race category. Printed out and hung on the wall is the data of the census and statistics as well as a description of the pieces showing the background information on how Mexican Americans are made to choose how they identify since there is still no box under the race category that is for Hispanic or Latin descent people. Projected next to the information graphs is a meat body showing the diet of my Mexican-American family.
