The owner’s program included fourteen classrooms, two science labs, administration, and media center, and a request that the building act as a gateway and control point and be seen as the “Main Office” immediately upon entering the campus. An analysis of the site and review of programmatic requirements resulted in the freestanding two-story 1100 Building (42,813 gross sq. ft.) positioned in a protective “L” at the end of the main entry drive and northeast corner of the campus. The 1100 Building's glass entry cube forms the nexus between the two rectangles and serves as East Forsyth’s gateway. The positioning of the entry allows for easy access for drop-off and pick-up and as a pedestrian gateway into the interior of the campus. The design of the glass entry provides openness, light, and at night an inviting sparkle. The rectangular brick wings have their own brick patterning and window shapes differentiating administration and media center wing from the classroom wing. The entry provides easy access to administration and classrooms on the lower level and by stair or elevator to the media center and classrooms on level two. The glass entrance functions as an air-lock, sound buffer, and the high clearstory windows on the second level provide light into the elevator lobby and media center.
