A Figure Ground Exploration

Figure Ground Exploration of the Letter A.
An exploration into how far a letter can be pushed and still be legible, while exploring the principles of graphic design.

The First group of 10 A's. Using techniques that convey action. Such as tear, cut, burn, and fold.
After a discussion on our original concepts we created 20 more pushing the use of the figure and the ground so the A would start to emerge.
We narrowed down our ideas from 20 to 3 styles to push forward with.
With more revisions we ended with 3 A designs and picked one to be our style for the next part of this project.
Next We took our style and applied it to the letters
P, L, and Y.
Next We tried to Oriente them on a 11 x 17 piece of paper.
We tried to place them in creative ways that still left the word easy to read.
The next step was to find the final orientation, pick 3 adjectives to describe our style, and to play around with color.
The Chosen Final Orientation
Then we began color explorations. I played around with the amount of colors I wanted to use and whether each letter should be a different color. I settled on using the rainbow pattern.
Then we started planning out our mood boards by collecting images that represent the feeling or action of our PLAY.
My first draft of the Play mood board. The smoke created movement and a great connection piece. The circles on the other hand did not represent the movement of PLAY.
The Final mood board had the movement continued through out.
The final step in this project was to create a gif. I created the Animation in Adobe After Effects and the gif in Photoshop.
