Daily UX Challenge - Day 2 - Landing Page

DailyUX Challenge - Day 2

The Challenge

“Design a landing page. The most important part of a landing page is the part of it that the user will see when he arrives on the page. Don't forget the call-to-action!”

The Approach

I decided to create a landing page for an imaginary restaurant. Thanks to this website for helping me choose a suitable hipster name :) http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/restaurant-names.php

Purpose of website
I thought about the overall purpose of a website for a typical restaurant:
 - Provide information about the restaurant, type of food
 - Allow people to book a table online
 - Provide contact details - phone number and email address
 - Link to menu
 - Help people find it - address and map
 - Communicate the brand
 - Quality photos of the food to entice customers
 - Photos of the restaurant itself, to convey atmosphere

Call-to-action
From this list I chose the most important things to make prominent on the landing page via the navigation:
 - Book a table (main call-to-action)
 - Menu
 - Contact
 - About

User interviews
In a real world situation I would also carry out some user interviews to find out when people last visited a restaurant website, the reason they visited, and see if the main user requirements would be met by the website design.

Also I would ask how regularly they booked a table online compared to just calling the restaurant to book a table. If the majority of people booked online, I would make sure that the ‘book a table’ call-to action was most prominent. I would also ensure that the phone number was easily accessible on the website, under the ‘contact’ section.

Sketch
I sketched out a basic layout for the landing page:

Final design
Here is my final design, created in Sketch. Thanks to https://www.pexels.com for the image.

Usability testing
Ideally I would then carry out usability testing with different design layouts, for example web and mobile, to find out if users could get the information they needed.

Usability testing tasks could include the following:

a) Imagine you want to book a table online. Visit the website and book a table for two people tomorrow at 7.30pm.
b) Visit the website and get the phone number in order to call the restaurant.
c) View the menu to see if they have any gluten free dishes.
