Treasured Islands, Canadian Geographic September/October 1996 Vol.116 No.5 p.40-41
This double page spread is my first freelance map design assignment for Canadian Geographic magazine.  The full map extent is shown above, with a half scale detail below.
Red River Dance, Canadian Geographic July/August  1997 Vol.117 No.4 p.54
This is one of 9 maps I have had published in the magazine.
This map of Gamètì is a cartographic investigation for a map series of the Tlichlo First Nation. The design takes a post-colonial position, offering a culturally-centered, aspirational view of the community and the First Nation. The map reduces the UTM grid to notations at the neat line, removing the imposition of colonial measuring systems from the Nation’s territories. The cover borrows its geometry directly from the Tlichlo flag, while the linked floral motif echos the bead work which decorate local crafts.
The design brief specified a map of Calgary superimposing topographic map layers over a remote sensing image.  A restrained palette of orange, brown and blue calms the pinks and bright greens of the image.

Detail of Index 1
In April 1999, Canada welcomed a new territory into its national identity when Nunavut came into being.  The Center for Topographic Information marked the occasion by issuing a 1:50 000 topographic map of Nunavut’s capital, Iqaluit.  I art directed the new map, and designed this locator map to introduce the territorial extent of Nunavut and its communities to Canadians.

(I recycled this base map to make an audio map of Nunavut that lets the user hear place names pronounced in Innuktitut.  It appears on a website to celebrate the creation of Canada’s newest territory.)
The creation of Nunavut instigated other commemorative gestures at CTI, including a web site which examines the historic geography of the Iqaluit region.  Above are a map of pre-European Inuit camp sites, and a map identifying locations of early military interest.  Both accompany a textual component of the web site.
