1) ERGO PROXY

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where methane hydrate layers of earth exploded, the remainder of humankind live in domed cities in drab and isolated conditions. Civilization is assisted by AutoReivs robots, and the story begins with them breaking free of human control through a virus infection that causes them to go berserk. Investigation to improve human’s weak existence begins, and a mysterious life form called Proxy is discovered. Throughout this journey, the protagonist Vincent discusses with the Proxy the idea of “ergo” and “self”. The anime is all about self-discovery and a philosophical debate of nature vs. nurture.

2) PSYCHO-PASS

Classified as a science fiction with psychological action, Psycho-pass is characterized by heavy philosophical undertones and references. The intriguing setting takes place in the near future, where citizens are regulated by an all-seeing entity known as the Sibyl System. Everyone is monitored psychologically in quantifiable values, and individuals who does not measure up to society’s standards are singled out and eventually forfeited. The anime poses the question of morality – the age-old debate of the fine line between what is right and what is wrong.

3) SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN

Produced back in 1998, Serial Experiments Lain is a cyberpunk series that remains as one of the most distinctive animated series of all time. It is heavy in its existential and philosophical themes with a deliberately nonlinear narrative. With many awards and accolade on its repertoire, it is a certainly a fan favorite amongst the intellectual viewers. Taking place in suburban Japan, main protagonist Lain is first introduced to the Wire, a network that parallels the Internet we know today. She is then caught up in a series of cryptic, mysterious incidents that reveals the themes of reality and perception in the show.
