Apparel Design | Inspired from birds

In this project at NID, the brief was to develop an apparel inspired from birds. The feathers on a bird's wings appear to be arranged in an organic manner, but the structure underneath follows a pattern. Taking this idea ahead, a concept garment using paper was developed focusing on the structured arrangement of the feathers.

The paper concept was then evolved into a textile garment, by building onto the idea of creating a contrast between this structured arrangement of feathers and the wandering, free-flowing nature of birds. The top of the garment is rigid and structured, achieved by stitching pleats in opposite directions. The bottom is a loose, kaftan inspired, silhouette with a handkerchief hem, that represents the elegant, free spirited and expansive wings of a bird.
