EDINBURGH — The ANC is the party that led the change from apartheid and white rule to democracy, so it is ironic that its own culture is fostering anti-democratic leadership. Don’t be fooled by politicians urging the ANC to unite in the interests of South Africa. ‘Unity’ is in fact a euphemism for consensus leadership, warns Mashupye Herbert Maserumule of the Tshwane University of Technology. Read between the lines and the call for unity within the ANC is also a call to Cyril Ramaphosa to pledge to go easy on the corrupt. The presidential hopeful has promised to get tough on graft and clean up government. Without sufficient support within the ranks of the compromised and the captured, Ramaphosa is unlikely to be chosen as the next ANC leader. – Jackie Cameron
