Three-Dimensional Principles of Design
Photographs of objects showing basic principles
The principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art. The challenge is to create and craft a three-dimensional composition that communicates a principle of design: symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, radial balance, scale, emphasis, proportion, variety, harmony.
Proportion of Wood material: a relationship of the part to the whole. Refers to the relationship of a part to the whole and to each other.
Emphasis and Hierarchy of Styrofoam: A way of focusing attention to one part of a work through placement, color, or contrast.
Rhythm/Movement of Styrofoam material: Created by the careful placement of repeated elements to create a visual tempo or beat; suggestion of motion.
Harmony/Unity of Wood and Geometric solid: A way of combining similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities giving the work a sense of completion.
