CHIMERA 9
Promotional Poster
This piece was done for the promotion of the Chimera 9 Soirée at the Erie Art Museum. Chimera is an art and literary journal that is produced at Edinboro University. The term chimera originates from Greek mythology meaning a fire-breathing female monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail. This term is used to describe the three parts of the journal; fine art, literature, and film and video. For this piece I wanted to look at the fine art aspect of the journal, but incorporate the literary aspect. Doing so resulted in an idea through the form of a question; what would a poem look like in motion? I made a list of words that all related to one of the three parts of the book. I set my phrases in Edwardian script because of its free-flowing nature it resembled what I most closely would associate with a poem. I then hand cut all my phrases, hung them from the ceiling at different lengths and lit the scene from the side. I photographed it and added a digital 9 in Adobe Illustrator along with the informative type at the bottom. This piece is 30.5x18”, printed on glossy paper.
