The PTSD River Cure
An editorial re-design utilizing a complex grid and icon system.
This editorial piece was designed using a six-column grid system to integrate a large body of text, photography, captions, illustration, and iconography. An icon system of fly fishing flies was developed to take the place of drop caps—I like to call them Fly-cons. This article features the photography of Corey Arnold and the writing of Patrick Symmes. The article features a Navy veteran who has channeled his struggles with PTSD into finding a "cure" on Oregon's Willamette River, where he first learned to fly fish. He now teaches at-risk children the sport on that same river, while running a fly shop in Portland.
Icons: The icons take the place of traditional drop caps.
